At its heart, Društvo Tobi is a story of three women - a mother, Dagmar, and her two daughters, Nika and Melissa - who decided to become the voice for the voiceless. Operating out of Muta, Slovenia, this small, independent team works tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals who have been abandoned or neglected.
In just three years of operation, they have changed the lives of over 300 animals - averaging nearly 100 rescues every single year.
A Family Bond, A Shared Mission
What makes Društvo Tobi so special is how this family channels their unique strengths to give every rescued animal exactly what they need:
- Dagmar: Brings the nurturing, maternal energy. She ensures the shelter is spotless, handles the feeding, and dotes on the cats endlessly.
- Melissa: Dedicates her heart to the senior cats (10+ years old) and those recovering from severe injuries, managing complex medical treatments, wound care, and physical therapy.
- Nika: Runs what she playfully calls the “rehabilitation center,” spending hours sitting quietly with deeply traumatised, terrified rescues, using patience and treats to slowly teach them how to trust humans again.
The absolute foundation of their work is the transparency and unconditional trust they share as a family - an honesty that allows them to push through the heavy emotional and physical demands of rescue work.
In a world where animals are too often treated as thoughtless objects rather than living, feeling beings, Dagmar, Nika, and Melissa are on a daily mission to shift the narrative.
